Since 1999, Agrodev
has been working with Mosaic.net International to
deliver workshops in participatory development.
These workshops are held every summer in Ottawa
and attract participants from all over the world
from multilateral (World Bank, African
Development Bank, UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, WFP, FAO
etc.) and bilateral (CIDA, USAID etc.) agencies,
NGOs (CARE, Save the Children, World Vision etc.)
universities, public sector, private sector and
community organizations. More than 150
development practitioners have been trained in
these workshops.
The Participatory Learning and Action (PLA)
workshop focuses on core participatory concepts,
tools and their application. It is an intensive
six-day practical and experiential workshop set
in the community to maximize learning, group
interaction and networking. Topics include:
- The origins of Participatory Development,
- Learning and application of PRA/PLA tools
(ranking, venn diagram, mapping, semi-structured
interviewing, trend analysis, gender
analysis and other methods such as
appreciative inquiry),
- the application of participation to
project design, monitoring and
evaluation,
- Developing effective facilitation skills,
building action plans and team-building.
Two-day community assignments proposed by
community-based organizations in the Ottawa
region have allowed participants to apply tools
learned in the workshop to real-life situations.
The Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation (PM
& E) workshop involves a different approach
to project monitoring and evaluation by involving
local people. Project stakeholders and
development agencies decide together about how to
measure results and what actions should follow
once this information has been collected and
analyzed. This experiential workshop is
practically focused with daily excursions into
the community and a three-day community
assignment. Topics covered at the workshop
include:
- Origins of PM & E,
- Skills and attributes of a PM & E
facilitator,
- Learning PM & E tools,
- Designing a monitoring and evaluation
framework and action plan.
A Project/Organization Clinic is held as part
of the workshop, based on projects from the
participant's workplace, that provides a rich
environment for feedback.
